The Arkansas River traverses 160 miles across 400,000 acres of farm land within the basin providing water for agricultural production that feeds our communities. Many organizations have contributed data that describes and quantifies the health of the river system along this stretch however this data exists in many formats, in many disparate locations, making it difficult to access and use to inform management practices and projects to improve the watershed health.
The purpose of the Arkansas Basin Implementation Guide to Watershed Health - also known as the Science Plan - is to develop and publish a detailed, user-friendly guide that can inform agricultural management practices and projects to improve watershed health in the basin, with a focus on reducing high concentrations of nutrients and metals in tributaries of the Arkansas River. The Implementation Guide will:
Organize and compile past, present, and proposed research and projects to better understand the current issues within the watershed and identify gaps.
Create a digital (mapping) watershed health guide to identify existing research/ project, analyze existing gaps, and direct future implementation of projects.
Provide education and outreach on the findings and use of the guide for future project implementation.
ARWC is partnering with two Arkansas Basin Roundtable working groups - the Lower Arkansas Water Quality Working Group and the Regional Resource Planning Group - to complete the Implementation Guide.
