The High Mountain Institute has been in operation for 20 years in Leadville, Colorado, offering students wilderness and leadership experiences in addition to classroom learning. The Institute attracts students from across the US and internationally.
The campus sits within 80 acres of lodgepole pine forest that largely consists of an overstocked monoculture - or a thick stand of trees that are of approximately the same age and type - making it vulnerable to disease and catastrophic wildfire. The forest stand improvement project was designed to remove excess trees with the goals of wildfire mitigation and wildfire prevention, insect and disease control, maintaining a healthy and sustainable forest, wildlife habitat improvement, noxious weed control and preserving aesthetics and improving recreational experience of students and visitors.
